The Light Through the Woods

A picture book about grief

The Light Through the Woods is an illustrated children’s book created to help young readers and their caregivers navigate the emotional impact of grief, depression, and loss. Written during the early years of the COVID-19 pandemic, the book responds to a persistent gap: the absence of developmentally appropriate, emotionally honest resources for children facing complex emotional experiences.

The story centers on Fox, a character who becomes overwhelmed by a deep, unshakable sadness. As Fox moves through confusion, fatigue, anger, and isolation, the narrative offers readers a language for recognizing and expressing difficult feelings. Without simplifying or rushing past pain, the book affirms the reality of loss while gently suggesting the possibility of healing.

This project was created as a tool for families, educators, and mental health practitioners seeking to support children through trauma and mourning. It has resonated with both children and adults—providing a shared space for dialogue, empathy, and emotional literacy.
